Temperature & Humidity Control System for Wash Water Treatment Plant

Temperature & Humidity Control System for Wash Water Treatment Plant

Southern Water, a leading water and wastewater services provider, faced challenges at their Hadham Water Supply Works in West Sussex. The existing wash water treatment and sludge processing plant encountered issues with moisture affecting the flocculant powder, rendering materials unusable. To address this, Southern Water enlisted Trant Engineering to provide a solution. Trant Engineering, in turn, collaborated with Air Control Southern Ltd to supply, install, and commission a comprehensive moisture control system.

Project Scope

The scope of work for Trant Engineering included supplying, installing, and commissioning a moisture control system, along with associated cooling functions. The goal was to establish a controlled environment for year-round temperature and humidity within the wash water treatment and sludge processing plant at the Hardham Water Supply Works. Air Control Southern Ltd, as a subcontractor, took charge of installing a specialized desiccant Air Handling Unit (AHU) supplied by Munters Ltd, along with a bespoke cooling coil connected to a Mitsubishi Electric Direct Expansion coil condenser for humidity control.

Key Components Installed

  1. Desiccant Air Handling Unit (AHU): Supplied by Munters, the AHU played a vital role in maintaining desired humidity levels, addressing the issues caused by moisture affecting the flocculant powder.
  2. Bespoke Cooling Coil: Air Control Southern designed and installed a customised cooling coil, working in tandem with the desiccant AHU. This component contributed significantly to achieving precise temperature control and mitigating moisture-related challenges.
  3. Mitsubishi Electric Direct Expansion Coil Condenser: Integrated with the cooling coil, the condenser from Mitsubishi Electric regulated temperature and humidity levels, ensuring optimal conditions for wash water treatment and sludge processing operations.
  4. Ductwork and Dampers: Air Control Southern was responsible for the design and installation of all interconnecting rectangular and circular ductwork. Smoke and fire dampers were installed for enhanced safety.

Challenges & Solutions

Southern Water faced challenges with their existing plant, where flocculant powder was absorbing moisture from the environment, rendering materials unusable. The moisture control system, implemented by Trant Engineering and Air Control Southern Ltd, successfully addressed these challenges by providing a controlled environment conducive to preventing moisture absorption.

Outcome

The collaborative efforts resulted in the successful implementation of a state-of-the-art moisture control system at the Hardham Water Supply Works. The wash water treatment and sludge processing plant now operate with improved efficiency, ensuring year-round temperature and humidity control. The integrated components effectively mitigated the issues with the flocculant powder, preventing moisture-related problems and ensuring the usability of materials.

Conclusion

This case study showcases the successful collaboration between Trant Engineering and Air Control Southern Ltd in resolving the challenges faced by Southern Water at the Hardham Water Supply Works. The implemented moisture control system not only addressed the issues with flocculant powder but also stands as a testament to the expertise and innovation brought by the involved parties in creating a tailored solution for the specific needs of the client.
